Honest comparison
Trip Chronicle vs Day One
A journal you write for life, or a trip journal nobody has to write. Which one fits your group?
Day One is one of the best-known journaling apps, and its Shared Journals let a group write in one journal together. Trip Chronicle is narrower on purpose: it's only for trips, and nobody has to write. Here's an honest look at both.
At a glance
| Day One | Trip Chronicle | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A general journaling app for every day of your life. Shared Journals let a group write together. | A travel journal made for trips with friends: trips, days, and a narrator. |
| Group size | A Shared Journal holds up to 30 members, including the owner. Anyone can create one, free. | A trip crew, plus friends who join for a single day. |
| How you add things | Write entries; members can comment and react. | One-tap logs (scenes, moments, food, ideas), photos, and short notes to the narrator. |
| Structure | Journals and entries, on any topic. | Trips made of days. Each day is live, then ends with a recap. |
| During the day | You write when you like. | Live narrator reactions, group side quests, and a chat just for that day. |
| The story | You write it. AI tools such as Go Deeper and Entry Highlights come with paid plans, most of them with Gold. | A narrator you pick writes the day's chronicle from what the crew logged (free on your first day, then with Trip Pass). |
| Photos | One photo per entry on the free plan; more on paid plans. | A shared photo album for every day. |
| Privacy | Shared Journals are end-to-end encrypted (except while a cloud AI tool processes an entry). | Private, invite-only crews. No public feed, no location tracking. |
| Price | Free plan; paid Silver and Gold plans. | Free app; optional one-time purchases per trip and extra narrators. |
| Keeping it | Export to PDF, JSON, text or CSV, depending on the device; printed books from iPhone and iPad. Entries stay when a subscription ends. | Free export of each trip and day. Trips have a removal date after they end unless you buy Keep Forever. |
Choose Day One if
- You like writing, and you want one journal for your whole life, not only your trips.
- End-to-end encryption matters to you.
- You want to keep everything long term, export it in several formats, or print it as a book.
Choose Trip Chronicle if
- It's a trip with friends and nobody wants homework: one tap per moment is the whole job.
- You want the day told back to you as a story, in the voice of a narrator you picked.
- You want the trip to feel like a game too: side quests, awards, live reactions.
Or use both
Write your own reflections in Day One, and let the crew's day live in Trip Chronicle. When a trip ends, export its days and keep them wherever you keep your memories.
